We currently have open shop hours in Chamblee on Tuesday evenings, 6:00-8:00 pm and in Clarkston on Thursday evenings, 5:00-8:00 pm. During this time, you can use our tools and supplies to tune up your bike. Don't know how? One of our volunteers will be glad to show you. If your bike needs replacement parts, we may have just the component you need. If you need a bike, you can participate in our Earn-A-Bike Program.
All open shop services are available for free with a suggested donation. Please see our Suggested Donations page for more information.
If you don't already have a bike, you can earn one from the Communicycle shop by putting in the time to fix it up through our Earn-A-Bike Program. We have lots of bicycles and frames in various states of disrepair, all of which need a some fixing up and a little bit of love. For a suggested donation of $20 ($10 for small children's sizes), you can select one of these bikes, and our volunteers will work with you to diagnose any problems, find used parts that are missing or need to be replaced, and get your "new" bike rolling again. If you don't have $20, you can earn the bike by putting in some volunteer hours at the shop, or by a variety of other options. We'll be happy to talk with you about what arrangement will work best; no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
Most of our bikes need some loving attention to get them rolling, but for those needing transportation in a hurry, we have a limited supply of used bikes that have already been fixed up by our volunteers. Feel free to stop during open shop and ask one of our volunteers about availability and pricing.
We recognize that not everyone can make it to the Communicycle shop during our Open Shop Hours. For this reason, about once a quarter, Communicycle takes our shop on the road. We visit a local apartment complex and set up on location for several hours on a weekend afternoon, during which time we make our tools and volunteers available for free basic bike-repair services. Mobile shop days are always a little hectic and a lot of fun, and we can always use more volunteers. (Along with bike mechanics, we need volunteers who can come serve as greeters, hand out snacks, and play with kids. There's a place for everyone!) If you'd like to help out for an afternoon, please contact us for more information.
Our shop is open to youth ages 10 and older. (Younger children are welcome if they come with a parent.) We encourage youth to get involved as volunteers at the shop, and we'll be happy to help you learn the skills you need to do so. If you need a bike, you can participate in our Earn-A-Bike Program, a fun, educational experience in which you'll learn the ins and outs of how your bike works by going through the following steps:
Wherever possible, we try to pair our youth participants with adult volunteers in a mentoring friendship, which may be long-term or just for the length of a particular project. If you are an adult interested in being a part of our mentoring program, we would love to talk with you. Bike repair knowledge is a plus, but even if you start out knowing nothing about bike mechanics, you can learn the skills alongside the student. The only requirement is a willingness to get to know and care about the student you are working with during the time they are working in the shop. In some cases the mentoring friendship will involve transportation between the student's home and the Communicycle shop. Please contact us for more information.
