Get Involved at Communicycle

Communicycle is a volunteer operation. We need your skills, energy, creativity, and whatever time you have to give, no matter how big or small. If you already know some bike repair or if you want to learn, we would love to work with you. If bike repair isn't your thing, there are lots of other ways to get involved, from mentoring to administration. Whatever skillset you have to offer, we will make a place for you to use it!

Some of the volunteer positions we have available include:

The Wrench
(Shop Mechanic)
Description: The person that knowledgeably assists program participants with bike repairs
Time Involved: 6-12 hours a month
Sample Tasks:
  • Attend open shop as often as possible, preferably at least every other week
  • Instruct participants in the methods of bike repair
  • Teach and explain with patience
The Hummingbird
(Shop Worker)
Description: The person that assists in the shop with non-mechanic tasks
Time Involved: 3-12 hours a month
Sample Tasks:
  • Attend open shop when available
  • Organize parts and tools in the shop
  • Take apart bikes and separates parts into bins
  • Help with whatever items are on the to-do list in the shop at any given time
The Orange Cheese
(Shop Manager)
Description: The person that opens, manages, and closes the shop on an open shop day
Time Involved: 12 hours a month
Sample Tasks:
  • Attend open shop once a week
  • Unlock the building and shop
  • Place signage in appropriate spots
  • Create an atmosphere of safe space and hospitality for all program participants
  • Restore order to the shop at the end of the session, reorganizing tools, parts, etc.
  • Close up the building and shop
The Cheery Daisy
(Greeter)
Description: The person who is the friendly face at the shop or at a Communicycle event that meets/greets people and gets them connected to the assistance they need
Time Involved: 3-12 hours a month
Sample Tasks:
  • Meet/Greet at the shop or at an event
  • Connect people with mechanics that can help them out
  • Float to all the volunteers making sure everyone has everything they need
The Young at Heart
(Youth Mentor)
Description: The person that works with youth on an individual basis in the shop
Time Involved: 6-12 hours a month
Sample Tasks:
  • Work with youth participants (one or two at a time) on projects in the shop
  • Get to know youth on a personal level, developing caring relationships with them
  • Help with transportation to and from the shop, if needed
  • Share the love of Christ with youth in and out of the shop
The Laffy Taffy
(Youth Mentor Coordinator)
Description: The person that works to bring youth from area communities into the program and works to make sure that each youth is known and befriended
Time Involved: 4-6 hours a month
Sample Tasks:
  • Make the program known in the neighborhoods to recruit youth participiants
  • Work with the “A-1 Cab Company CEO” to discuss transportation needs
  • Pair each youth with a mentor who will get to know them as they participate
  • Tell great jokes that youth think are funny
The A-1 Taxi Company CEO
(Transportation Coordinator)
Description: The person responsible for arranging transportation for youth who want to be involved in the program
Time Involved: 2-10 hours a month
Sample Tasks:
  • Supply and/or find transportation for youth and adults who want to participate during open shop
  • Obtain permission slips from the parents of minors
The A La Peanut Butter Sandwiches
(Funds and Supplies Gatherer)
Description: The person who magically makes money and stuff appear out of thin air
Time Involved: 4-6 hours a month
Sample Tasks:
  • Work to understand the financial and capital needs of the program
  • Work on the tasks of fundraising and grant writing
  • Acquire necessary goods
  • Come to a shop night at least once a quarter to experience the needs first-hand
The Lasso
(Volunteer Recruiter)
Description: The person that heads up shop volunteer recruitment and organizes informational and training events
Time Involved: 4-6 hours a month
Sample Tasks:
  • Work to understand the program’s volunteer situation
  • Respond to initial inquiries of potential volunteers
  • Organize quarterly informational events for potential and new volunteers
  • Organize basic volunteer training events prior to a mobile shop day or other event
The Duke/Duchess of Mobility
(Mobile Shop Coordinator)
Description: The person in charge of coordinating details for mobile shop days
Time Involved: 2-4 hours a month
Sample Tasks:
  • Secure date/time/location for each bi-monthly mobile shop day
  • Obtain tent and signage permits with Chamblee Town Hall
  • Deliver flyers to appropriate locations
  • Inform the Lasso of the need for volunteer training events
  • Secure a vehicle and driver that can tow a trailer
The Velcro Octopus
(Bridge Builder)
Description: The person in charge of building bridges between Comunicycle and other organizations (Christian ministries, Bike Shops, Local Groups, Schools, Youth Groups, Churches…)
Time Involved: 4-12 hours a month
Sample Tasks:
  • Work to discover and make connections with other organizations in order to widen the program’s volunteer base, funding sources, and sphere of influence
  • Set up and attend meetings with such organizations
The Velvet Fog
(Public Relations)
Description: The person who serves as the voice of Communicycle, speaking eloquently at churches, fundraisers, awareness events, etc., or who makes sure someone else is ready to take on such a task
Time Involved: 0-4 hours a month
Sample Tasks:
  • Speak at churches/meetings with an eloquent recap or pitch needs to be made
The Rev
(Spiritual Advisor)
Description: The person in charge of keeping Communicycle on task in balancing openness/hospitality with the very reason we started in the first place: the love of Jesus
Time Involved: 2-8 hours a month
Sample Tasks:
  • Develop winsome approaches to ministry that are both clear and inviting
The Locale Guru
(Neighborhood Coordinator)
Description: The person who works to know the needs of a specific neighborhood and loudly encourages other volunteers to assist in meeting these needs
Time Involved: 4-6 hours a month
Sample Tasks:
  • Spend time talking with residents, youth, property managers, and city officials about a specific apartment complex or neighborhood
The Loudmouth Lobbyist
(Community Advocate)
Description: The person who attents local meetings (town hall / city council, transportation meetings, etc.) and loudly advocates for the needs of the bicycling and pedestrian community in Chamblee and Doraville
Time Involved: 0-6 hours a month
Sample Tasks:
  • Show up to relevant meetings adorned in Communicycle garb
  • Unabashedly make the related community needs known to the powers-that-be
The Frantic Rodent
(Errand Boy/Girl)
Description: The person that runs around town taking care of business and checking stuff off of the list.
Time Involved: 0-4 hours a month
Sample Tasks:
  • Bike/Drive to city hall to file and pick up permits
  • Drive to local bike shops to pick up donations and orders
  • Bike/Drive to meetings with apt. managers, mobile shop day co-sponsors, etc.
