Brother, Sister, Ride On!

The best way to understand Communicycle is to give you our stock answers to the questions we are asked most.

What is Communicycle?
Communicycle is about people – people who love cycling and building relationships. Communicyclists generally have two things in common: an interest in biking, and a desire for meaningful friendships.

Communicycle is about organized riding – right now we are holding a variety of road and trail rides once a month.

Communicycle is about keeping people rolling – for five bucks (to cover degreaser, lube, etc.), we work with indiviuals to help them repair their rides, with the goal of making cycling for transportation a little more sustainable and viable.

Communicycle is about meeting needs – we are linked with networks of people who identify cycling-related needs in lower-income areas nearby. Whether a kid has a flat or broken chain, or we hear of someone who has no way of getting around, we work hard to redistribute donated bicycles and parts to meet these needs.

What isn’t Communicycle?
We are not interested in showing off, and self-appointed superstars are not welcome. We are not a religious cult. We are not cookie-cutter people with the same heritage, values, or political beliefs. We are not all at the same skill level (by any means), and we are not ever trying to prove that we are better than anyone else. We are not professional bike wrenches, and we are most definitely not doing this for the money.

Why does Communicycle exist?
There are many reasons why this group started. Cycling is a sustainable form of transportation, a good source of exercise, and a lot of fun. We want to see as many folks as we can empowered to participate, so we are making a way by repairing, redistributing, and riding. We value relationships, and set up all of our wrenching services and group rides as a way to build bridges with each other.

Will Communicycle fix my bike?
Not really. We will work together with you to fix your bike. If you want to drop off a broken bike and pick up a fixed bike, we recommend the local bike store. If you are into good conversation and learning a little bit, this is a great option for you. The minimum donation is $5 for lube/ degreaser/etc. plus the cost of any parts we need to buy. (Though you are free to donate more if you like!) Send us an email with some specifics about your bike, and we'll make the arrangements.

I have an old bike in my basement. Is Communicycle interested in having it?
Yes. Send us an email and we'll make the arrangements.

What type of riding does Communicycle do?
Every ride is different. Some are road rides; some are trail rides. Some rides are local in the metro Atlanta area, and others may be as far as a few hours away. We rate each ride to give a sense of how strenuous it will be, but we never make the decision for you. We work as a team to complete each ride.

TYPE I – An easy, fun ride that is not too strenuous, long, or technical. These are perfect for new riders wanting to learn some basics and burn some calories.

TYPE II – A moderate ride that offers some challenges related to longer distances, technical aspects, or aerobic requirements. While not difficult, these rides are rewarding for new and seasoned riders alike.

TYPE III – A ride that poses a distinct challenge. This may be related to long distances on road or trail, a high-altitude climb, or terrain that offers more technical challenge. These rides promise an aerobic workout and a great sense of accomplishment.

Is Communicycle affiliated with a church or religious order?
Yes and no. We are associated with a non-profit ministry venture called Communitas, based in Doraville, GA. We are not religious by any means, but some of us have personal relationships with God. We are an open group of people who, in addition to riding, love to ask questions and share opinions. No one is here to stuff anything down anyone’s throat, and everyone is welcome regardless of personal beliefs.

Is Communicycle a non-profit organization?
Yes in the truest sense of the word. We don’t make a profit. Actually we don’t sell anything. Officially, though, we are not registered as an organization. The financials of Communicycle channel through Communitas, which is a registered non-profit organization. Everything that is done for Communicycle is offered on a volunteer basis, out of a love for cycling and building relationships.
